About
the formation of the Supers Technical Association of New York
(formerly Supers Club of New York)
The Superintendents Technical Association was
organized in March 1998 to fill a gap in the knowledge base of
multifamily building maintenance personnel: Directors of Maintenance,
Superintendents, Handypersons and Porters.
We
believe it to be the first technical society of its kind, and
its models are the technical societies of engineers that conduct
monthly meetings and issue publications to keep their members
up to date in matters pertaining to their professions.
For
the benefit of visitors to this website from those outside the
New York City area, the title Superintendent is synonymous with
Custodian, Caretaker or other such designation, indicating the
person responsible for the maintenance and operation of the physical
plant.
Often
called "Super," he (rarely she) may work alone or be
in charge of a maintenance staff that includes a handyman, porters
and, in luxury buildings, doormen and a concierge.
The
responsibilities of building superintendents are becoming more
highly technical as the technology of building operations becomes
more complex, and more critical as efficiency of building operations
affect housing's "bottom line", due to ever higher energy,
water and building maintenance costs.
On
the other side of the coin are buildings' generation of atmospheric
pollution. Hence, the professionalizing of supers increases in
importance.
